San Diego – Joint Mathematics Meeting 2018
So, I’m in San Diego, CA for the Joint Mathematics Meeting 2018, which for those of you who don’t know is a joint venture between the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). There has been over 6000 mathematicians attending and as such is the largest gatherings of mathematicians in the world.
I’m here giving a talk on my Ph.D. research titled “Shortest Path Computations in Stochastic Neural Systems”, which describes how to create a network of stochastic (read, randomly firing) neurons which solves the shortest path problems on a given weighted graph. While this method is not faster than existing methods we are able to gain insight in how biological systems solve the problem. We are currently in the process of submitting the paper to Neural Computation and once it’s submitted I’ll go into more detail on the specifics of our model.
On a more location specific note, the weather these last couple of days in San Diego has been fantastic. I’ve gone to a number of excellent talks and once I get back home I’ll go into more detail about the conference and the talks I went to.
